We have had news items, neighbourly chit-chat, reminiscences of the days when G’town was a small town of 5,000 (and before), and reminiscences of school days. We have had serious posts and some not-so-serious (I’m looking at you, Petitbois!). There was always a tendency to push the limits of good taste, which was policed by the Don Patrol, and occasionally we crossed that limit (I’m looking at you, D.o.R.K [in the true Faith (sic)]). One of the most widely read columns was the Quotations thread.
We also had controversy, sometimes quite bitter, and there were days when I was glad it was a virtual discussion group and not an in-person group !
In short, I (and I think many others) have fond memories of GTOL. But in two days, that’s ALL there will be, since I have decided to let GTOL’s web-hosting contract expire without being renewed. I do this reluctantly, since it’s been fun watching Peeb and Swahili and Fairy Footsteps and Jester and the good Doctor and Xman and Joe McGibbon and many others go at it.
GTOL could certainly be re-vitalized and returned to its previous glory, but it would take a younger person than me.
The plan is for the site to go down on April 1st. However, for a short time after that it could be revived, if someone is willing to step up and take it over. If any of you out there are that person, just e-mail me at mark[dot]llewellyn[at]gmail[dot]com and I’ll fill you in.
Thanks for all the fish.
