Attempted Identity Theft

Postby Al Darby » Fri Apr 13, 2007 7:25 pm

I've just been exchanging emails with Don this morning (evening for G'town) regarding an attempt by someone (Gee .. I wonder who?) to assume my identity on these boards.

Since I use my real identity on these boards, it can be considered to be "Attempted Identity Theft" and I'm pretty certain the RCMP would be keen to speak to whoever was logged on at the offending IP address, at the time.

Not once, but twice they tried and I suspect they're nowhere near smart enough to able to "mask" their IP.

In this day and age, it's a piece of cake for the RCMP, or whoever, to trace an IP back to the Service Provider and from their records, exactly who it was.

So ... were I them, and we know I'm not, I'd be talking to a good lawyer right now and not just waiting for the knock on the door.

This could get very interesting.

Finally, I have to compliment the Don Patrol for contacting me to verify the bona fides. They dug up an old hotmail address of mine, which wouldn't be that hard to find and tried registering, with it, under my name.

Don smelled a rat and immediately contacted me. Nice catch!

Nor are they smart enough to realize that we know you are already a registered member here and would delete any attempt in duplicating any user name immediately!

I think they knew I was registered :D, but wouldn't have realised it would flag up to Don and that all their logon details are automatically retained.

This person isn't Robinson Crusoe (wonder if they can spell that?) and most any fool would've know it'd been tried before and that safeguards are in place to prevent it happening and to facilitate IP tracking.

As I said, could get interesting.

Just on IP addresses, a lot of businesses have "static" IP addresses, as do many Broadband users. "Static" in that they don't change every time they log on to the Internet. e.g. mine stays the same unless I turn off the modem, or request a refresh.

If this person works for a company, or has non WiFi Broadband, there's a good chance they're already a member (or used to be) and it may well be possible to match the offending IP with one we already have, or at least to the same sub mask.

Oh this is interesting. Somebody's been busy. I'll have to see if it's somebody I know. The IP address stuff is a no brainer, but I think you'll need a better case for identity theft. How many Al Darby's could there be in this world? Well, the world now knows where one of them lives. He foolishly posted his latitude and longitude. Not wise. :?

How on earth can you presume to tell anyone what is, or isn't "wise"? I would think your choice of workmates automatically excludes you.

As for publishing my "latitude and longitude", the White Pages of Sydney do a much better job. You see Joe, unlike you, I'm not worried about sharing details about myself.

Joe, if you want to give me a bad time, you have to bring more to the party than what you have so far. Go find a bridge to play under.

(Gee .. I wonder who?)

Don't keep me in suspense, who was it? And what would be the point of being you on this board? For about 10 minutes it may work then BOOM the wall lands on you. Unless you are doing your banking through the board why bother, it's not like the world visits is it? Pretty sad life some people lead really. I have broadband but also have a dynamic IP address as far as I know so it is different each time I log on, and I don't use my real name on any boards just because of security, that and I'm shy........

So clever he is, yes, yet at the same time, so foolish, so naive! Uses a phony name, yet posts his picture!!!!
And surely, anyone with such a pale face, sporting such a tattoo on his left cheek....and those angled incisors.... seems like a dead giveaway to anyone who's looking for him.

Of course, he IS (or claims to be) thousands of miles away in Jolly Old Anglaisland..... so he should have obscurity here. In downtown Toronto, he'd blend right in, but here in G'town..... some might notice!

I think it's fair to say that we've all wished we were Al Darby from time to time.
