Just a note about the above snippit, the Google spiders do sort through and store references to this stuff. I found that out while trying to dig up info on Corrigan Technologies. Some of the hits I was getting referred me back to my postings on the subject on the GTOL site. So becareful what you say because anyone, anywhere, might stumble across your posting and see it out of context.

George,

FWIW, the PHP user database is pretty standard SQL database, but is held on the server and as such is generally not accessible to spiders. Typically the spiders crawl through the web pages and I'm not sure whether they refer to the original page(s) or copies held in local caches. Either way they'd only have access to the same data we can see. Even looking at source is not going to give them more.

In summary, I think the user data is reasonably secure, our biggest worry would be if the ISP didn't protect the site from hackers.

JenG is technically up there on PHP forums, so she may wade in with more info on this, especially if I've got back asswards.

No worries Al, your ass is forward!

The statement in the user registration is one provided by the developers of phpBB software. It's basically saying that we will not provide your user information to any third party that requests it. Google Bots and other types of spiders only crawl through the pages like Al said.

You are right, George, about being careful about what you say. Let's face it, the internet is public domain. If you don't want to be found, then don't post anything!

Have you ever tried Googling your name? I have and the first post thing that comes up is my alumni profile on GTOL and I don't mind that one bit! :)

I am not nearly as clever as Al or Jen or you Dave, but as Jen says, it is up to the poster to watch what they post, because it is public domain and anyone can read it. The admin and the PHP only control certain parts of a post that violate such things as profanity etc. But sometimes it is disguised within a made up word and we have to included it in the auto censor to make sure it does not appear. We were never expecting a person would ever call another by that word or refer to someone using that word, at least not in public.

Well, know I'm really sad you aren't coming to homecoming. A dance instructor may be just what we need!

I googled me, and came up with mostly me. That's what happens when you have a relatively unusual last name, and a first name that no kind parent would ever give their son. But I did discover that there is a Sir Barry Jowett, which fills me with pride. However, if we use Google as a source, it's clear that I am the most famous Barry Jowett ever. Now you can all tell people "I know THE Barry Jowett."

Hey, one of my favourite cousins is named Barry. It never occurred to me that my aunt and uncle were mean! :D

Actually, there's Gary, Barry and Larry in that family so he probably got that name to fit with the rhyming scheme!

You can usually find him at the Radical Car Club after work. Your good buddy Rob likely sees him all the time!
