Yes we may fool around a little bit but, let's not turn this into a debate site. Other wise I'm not interested. I have a soft spot in my life for the times I lived in Gtown. I want to reminisce about the good ole days and how the town is changing. Yes the world is in a mess but, I do not want to read about that here. That's why we have a news paper or CNN on the tube. Can we keep this site as a way of escape? I truly hope so. I feel we have enough drama in our lives. Can we please keep one thing innocent? Let's keep GTOL the way it was meant to be.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Jeff,

Looks like we both hit the [Submit] button at the same time, but since your "word count" is less than mine, it snuck in first.

Nice to know, I'm not an "Ireland", although, I do live on one.

I Second It

Postby Petitbois » Tue Mar 20, 2007 10:32 am

I agree wholeheartedly with Al and Jeff. The purpose of GTOL is to enjoy things Georgetown: past, present, future. We will certainly have debates about the issues here in Halton Hills- expansion, water, the environment, taxation, traffic etc.- as we should.
However, a free-for-all forum which has absolutely no chance of ever changing anyone's mind on the issues is out of place on GTOL. Look at the previous debacle. Multiply that by 20 new contentious issues, and the whole nature of this board is poisoned.

I agree with you that this is a predominantly "Georgetown" board, but so many of us haven't lived there for such a long time and I don't get there very often, even though we only live in Guelph. Amanda and I still go to our dentist - Dr. Markham, and we drive around and see what's happening occasionally, but for the most part, we're not there.

I like to read about and talk about so many interesting things going on in our lives, and Georgetown doesn't always enter into it. I guess for those of you who still live there and/or work there and have kids that go to school there, then talking about Georgetown will probably be utmost in your discussions. I have memories of our time in Georgetown, I went to GDHS, and we lived on Rosefield Drive for 17 years after we were married, but when you move on, there's only just so much that appeals about discussing the place.

So........the real vision for GTOL is ??????????

k folks. we had the vote and the majority said basically go with it, if somebody wants to be talking about it then let'em have at it. I don't think we'll see a repeat of the other nasty business, it will be cut short if we do.

I'm with Jeff on the "anybody want to go ahead and post anything thing".

The board will figure itself out. either people will jump in or it will live a short life if all the people who said they don't want to have it just stay out of it ... it should become pretty clear pretty quickly if it has a place here or not based on the audience.

the more we sit and chatter about whether it should be here or not just fuels the fire on the debate. Don (in his usual infinite wisdom!) went with majority rules and set it up. it's here... let's see if it gets used.

so to those who wanted it... use it! and those who don't ... don't! Use the other boards and go right on ahead and discuss all the benefits and merits of Georgetown to your hearts content... or just join the madness and hop in the ring with me and the jello and whatever other neredowells (sp?) I've coaxed into the ring...

just my 2 cents...

I guess I would be the best person to answer your question Julie Jane, when we began Georgetown Online back in the early part of 2000, we want a place for folks with a Georgetown connection that may have lost touch with a friend or acquaintance to reconnect, to create a place that you could keep in touch with what was happening in town, stay up with the latest Births, Death and In Memoriam announcements, be cause I have heard so often, "IF I ONLY HAD KNOWN...!". A place to remember and honour loved ones and friends that have left us, share in picture today and yesterday We want a place that one might also escape the pressure of the day while having a little fun. It was never intended as a place to come to debate world issue, to bring attention to them or give your view point is fine, but we really do not need heavy heated debate here, or name calling, insulting other members etc. I hope folks can find a little value here and enjoy what is offered. A place share with people that have had a connection with GEORGETOWN and have a little fun, but not hurtfully at another member's expense!

Any chance of a personal private forum with rules? Just askin'. I have no opinion either way.

I know, Don, and I've appreciated finding out about people from my past and how the "town" of Georgetown is evolving. And, no, I don't think heated debates of world issues are necessarily the way to go either. I like and enjoy the board generally. And, of course, I always read the announcements from the newspaper.

Message boards are tricky and it never takes long before the most well-intentioned premise goes awry sometimes. Keeping on the main track can be a challenge. I realise that we can choose to read or ignore subjects at our own discretion, and I've done that.

I think we need a variety though to keep it interesting and I don't envy you your position of having to "monitor" certain aspects of the content.

Thanks for the board though - it is a great place.
