Did you go here?

This is a school that has been around since the late 1950s, which one is it?

Is it Harrison or Park School?

For one year, barely remember it.
Just remember getting in trouble with the principle.
Not that things like that were unusual, but that time I was innocent and he was way over the top.

Yes, I went there from 1957 to 1963. The Principal when you went there, John, was Harold Henry. He could be very stern as I remember it. He left in 1960 to be replaced by Harry Knapper. Some teachers I remember are Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Cowan (aka Miss Riehl, Mrs. Nelson), Miss Scarlett, Mr. Mackison, Mr. Ken Harrison, Mr. Donald Grigg, Mr. Logan MacDonald and Mr. Brian Goodlet. I didn't think much of it at the time but in retrospect it was a pretty good school for that time.

I went there from grades 2 (1977-8) to 5 (1980-1). I was one of the students who started out at Joseph Gibbons until the board stopped busing kids across town who could go to schools closer to home.

In grade 2 we had two teachers -- Mrs. Vendetti, who left partway through the year to have a baby, and Mrs. MacLean.

Grade 3 was Mrs. Hewson. Grade 4 was Mrs. Brooks, who told stories about her younger days when she and her family would travel by ship to England and get the kitchen staff to make honey & bacon sandwiches. Grade 5 was Mr. Shier, who drove to school in a right-side-drive MG every day.

I'm going crazy trying to remember the name of the principal. He was a former Centennial principal or vice-principal, and was our principal throughout my time at Harrison. My last year at Harrison was the year he retired. I remember we threw him a surprise party in the gym and his retirement gift was a golf cart.

I've rarely seen the school from the front, actually -- it took me a second to recognize it in the photo. I always came to school through the path on Norton Crescent.

Phantom, I think we established several years ago that we both had Mrs. Cowan/Nelson. She was Mrs. Nelson when I was in her class in grade 6 at Centennial. She was a strict teacher, but I have good memories of her: she introduced us to old-time radio programs (which I still listen to today), and one day she took the entire class to Frank Vetere's for their "Build-Your-Own Sundaes."

I miss Frank Vetere's.

Was it Mr. Catlin, or Catling?

There was a Mr. Catling that I had at Park School for Principal. He also taught the Gr. 8's, but not sure where he was before that.

It wasn't Mr. Catling. It was Mr. Allen.

Would that have been Hazen Allen? A short man with a hunchback? He was principal at George Kennedy PS from '59 to at least '64 when I was there.

I don't think so -- I don't remember him being short, though at that age, every adult was tall. Even Mr. Shier. I don't recall a hunchback, either, but my memory can be kind. He was bald and wore glasses, if that helps. I'll see if there's a picture in the vault somewhere.

Mrs. Cowan was my grade 6 teacher at Harrison. Centennial wasn't built until 3 more years after that. She also taught my oldest daughter at Centennial years later.
The teacher with the pointy boobs was Mrs. Silk (we used to call her torpedo tits lol). She was a supply teacher when I went to GDHS.

She was a very tall woman, and with heels, would have been about 6' 3".
I remember shorter guys being concerned that they might run into her on a blind corner and have an eye poked out. Others thought it would be worth it!
I wore glasses and didn't worry.

I wonder where she is now? I liked her as a teacher.

Yeah, that seems about right given her age. I keep forgetting that I'm getting older too.

Bit of a shame she's remembered for her bosom and not her accomplishments.

Good observation, Al.
She was never a teacher of mine, but she was a neighbour. She and her husband, a very tall policeman, lived just up the street from us on Langstone.
