50 years ago today I quit smoking cigarettes.

Yay ! ! ! ! !

At the time I quit, I didn't actually know that I was quitting. I was simply trying to see how long I could go without smoking.... trying to set a 'personal best'.

It was tough, but I kept going by keeping tally of how much money I was saving (I was broke at the time), and when it got even tougher I reminded myself what an investment I now had in not smoking (the number of days that I had already gone without a smoke). And when it got tough to the point that I knew I was going to relapse, I imagined being in the doctor's office when I was 45 being told I had lung cancer --- and I knew that if that happened I'd be furious with myself that I had allowed being a wuss to bring me to death's door !

So now it's 50 years later, and smoking is just a distant bad dream.

I on the other hand smoked for 50 years. I quit in 2014, in September not sure what day. Four years later I still dream of smoking. During the dream I get so mad at myself for smoking because I know I'd never be able to quit again. I had been trying to quit since 1970 then in 2014 I found the magic pill.

Double Yay ! ! ! ! !

I'm so glad you quit.

I know what you mean about dreams. I still occasionally dream that I'm smoking. It's a weird sensation when I wake up -- regret that I 'started' again and annoyance with myself.

According to the experts you should live forever, me, for every year I live after i quit i should get another 2.5 years.

I thought I was bad after 4 year still dreaming of smoking. I guess 50 years makes you weirder than me.
