Hit-run leads to shootout with cops

Postby BonnieC » Fri Mar 30, 2007 8:48 am

After trading gunfire with a shotgun-wielding man wanted in a hit-and-run crash, two Halton cops chased down the shooter and relieved him of his still-loaded weapon, a police spokesman said yesterday.

"The shotgun was loaded and ready to fire," Halton Police Sgt. Peter Payne said.

The shootout happened in Georgetown just after 7 p.m. when police started receiving calls about a dark-coloured minivan that had fled the scene of a crash near Norville, just south of Georgetown.

Two cops were on the lookout when they spotted a van matching the description near a strip mall on Sinclair Ave.

After they pulled it over, "the driver of the van exited the vehicle with a shotgun and began firing on the two officers," Payne said.

"They took cover and returned fire."

Payne said it's not known how many shots were fired but that both the officers and the gunman fired more than once each.

When the gunfire died down, the man ran but was eventually caught.

Charges and the arrested man's name were not available last night.

Breakfast television had St. Clair as the location of the shooting...it took a few minutes to realize it was Sinclair.

CH had a television truck and a portable satellite dish set up in the Petro Canada parking lot, when I took Nick to school.

Some days, they're lucky if they can spell "Sun" correctly.
